How to Find a Public Restroom Fast, Anywhere You Are

Nobody wants to be searching for a restroom under pressure. A little preparation makes the difference between a quick detour and a genuine emergency.

Start with a map-based locator

Apps and sites that pull from OpenStreetMap data, like this one, can show you facilities within a few blocks based on your GPS location. Look for listings that include opening hours and accessibility notes, since a restroom that's technically on the map but closed for the day isn't much help.

Know the reliable fallbacks

When a dedicated public restroom isn't nearby, certain categories of businesses are dependable in most cities: large chain coffee shops, fast food restaurants, hotel lobbies, department stores, and public libraries. Shopping malls and train or transit stations are also strong bets almost anywhere in the world.

Plan ahead for longer outings

If you're heading out for a hike, a long walk, or a road trip, check the route in advance and note two or three options along the way rather than waiting until you need one. Parks and rest areas are usually your best options outside of dense urban areas.

Keep small change or a card handy

In many countries, public restrooms charge a small fee, particularly at train stations. Carrying a bit of local currency or a card means you're not turned away at the door.
